Discussion:
A trend

According to the huge swathe of message headers I've just downloaded
from an alternative usenet provider (now that my ISP has stopped
providing such a service), every new thread in alfafda since
mid-January has been started by me.

Obviously this doesn't necessarily reflect the actual case, given that
there may have been threads started with X-No-Archive flags set. But I
still think it's interesting as a trend.

Up to a point, anyway. More interesting than cleaning the house, which
is what I'm putting off doing.

Ho hum.

... off to do some vacuuming.

Huzzah!" Good to have you back, though off time was very short. Actually
I am probably going to be more offline than you as I'm going abroad and
my server is accessible only from Denmark.

Also, it's a weird record. InsaniTea?

I would probably have waited longer for it to fix itself, but I idly
thought I'd prod around my ISP's website to see what was what and
discovered that due to a lack of demand they were planning to cut off
usenet support at about the end of September.

What about this posting? I'm now using Eternal September (hopefully).

Weirdly: not appearing when I get pull messages down from their server.
Not getting *anything* from any groups.

I have returned to news.telesweet.net, which provides me with messages
when I ask for them.

That's weird. I am on eternal-september, as you can see from my
headers, and I got all your messages. Maybe it is some specific
setting on your newsreader? Your messages /are/ on eternal-september
as well.

That's my thinking too.

I tried all the likely permutations of settings I could think of but
to no avail. It's possible I just confused it somehow with the rapid
change of usenet server setting over a short period? [shrug]. It would
connect to the server and then rip through all my subscribed groups
with "No new messages" for each.

When I swapped back to telesweet, I had a brief period of exactly the
same behaviour. Some mild cursing, some re-affirming of settings
("Yes, This is the option I want!" <click!>) and it started working
again. Very odd.

And they clearly propagated from eternal-september to telesweet, as
I've been able to download them now.

That /is/ weird. And you are using Agent which should be pretty
foolproof with this sort of stuff. Did you try downloading a group
you don't normally read to see if messages show up there?

Indeed. Also, thanks re: your email. You should see the changes. I
was not aware it mattered. :)

It certainly boggled my mind.

I subscribed to some of the eternal-september specific groups. They
had some messages I could download, however I didn't try them over
several days to see if "new" messages were arriving, nor did I attempt
to post any messages to them.

I never used agent, but I have seen similar behavior before on other news
readers.

I think news readers keep track of what messages are new by using a
tracking number. Any messages with a newer number than that are
considered new.

Sometimes, if you change news servers without clearing information about
groups, no messages are considered new, because the new news server has a
lower tracking number.

So probably, if you can consider it a new account, or clear old account
information, everything will work for you afterwards.

Then again, if telesweet works for you, I guess you don't really need
it :-)

Best,
Kåre

Yeah, it's something along that sort of line. I believe there are some
clever bits when the numbers roll over too.

This was the enigma I couldn't ascertain how to resolve. My version of
Agent doesn't appear to have a "I've changed news servers. Do
something appropriate" option.
